If we had an effective strategic defense our enemies would simply go around it. They could smuggle weapons in to the United States for example. That argument alone seems sufficient to discredit the Star Wars idea.
Very good article. I expect Trump is spouting whatever he last heard on the subject. But, this fits into Trump's "Fortress America" thinking, economically and militarily. And, what if, in his mind, his fortress does not include forward defence in the Pacific? This creates a logic in his thinking even if the whole plan is still expensively ludicrous.
